It's in the air

Fall is in the air. Can't you smell it? OK, so it's 91 degrees in Lexington today but come on, travel with me people! The school year has started and it reminds of of the line in "You've Got Mail" where Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are conversing by email. He remarks how New York in the Fall makes him want to buy school supplies and if he knew Meg Ryan's address, he would send her a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils. I LOVE that line! Yes, it's a bit cheesy but I like that movie, regardless of how much Matthew pokes fun at it.

Soon the leaves will change and I can almost smell the cinnamon and pumpkins. Wait, that may be my pumpkin spice scented candle. I always think the changing of seasons are the most exciting times of year. I love how one season is whisked away while another forces its way in. I once lived in a climate where it was basically summer year round and absolutely hated it. It dulls the senses and you lose all appreciation for the beautiful weather you have. I needed to live in an area where change comes frequently and moved. Fall is a reminder of all things fresh and crisp. The leaves morphing into beautiful colors, the start of a new year at school, anticipation of the first snowfall, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner...all things that remind me of how truly amazing the world can be.

Elisabeth and I walk around the Arboretum in Lexington each year when the leaves are changing. We talk about how to identify different trees by their leaves and she ends up saving some to put in a book. It usually leads us to a child's discussion on how things inevitably change and the new experiences that will come. I love those times with her. I look forward to taking Jacob this year as well. He may not pay attention to us when we point out the different trees but he sure will love jumping in the leaves.
