Today was our first day of Kindergarten. I say "our" because we have been preparing as a family for this day for a long time. There have been years of singing the ABC song, learning to use our listening ears and many other repetitive tasks to get our daughter to this day. We have spent the summer buying supplies and uniforms. We have talked about how "big girl school" will be different from preschool.
Finally, our day arrived. Somehow we managed to get Elisabeth to sleep at a reasonable hour. She woke up refreshed and ready to go. She donned her uniform, ate breakfast and was in the car before we could blink. She did not want to take pictures outside of school. We told her that it's a big day and we wanted to remember it. After a long sigh, she smiled for the camera and we went to her room. I felt my throat catch as we rounded the hallway leading to her room but swallowed the tears. She went right into her classroom, sat down at her labeled chair and began coloring a picture of a schoolhouse that was left for her by the teacher. After a few more obligatory pictures followed by a few kisses and I'm proud of you's, my husband and I headed off. We snuck one last peek at her before leaving and saw her happy, beautiful, smiling face eagerly anticipating what the day would bring. I am so excited to pick her up this afternoon and find out what she did today!
We realize in the enormous world picture that this is just one small event. So thank you for allowing us to share it with you. I truly beleive that it is the culmination of important times like this that makes the world go round. These milestones are the reason life is so very precious and we thank God for that. Have a blessed day!
